How Do I Keep My Teeth Healthy?

Oral hygiene is extremely important, but yet there are still so many of us who overlook the fact that we should take care of our teeth and gums. Oral hygiene is mostly a case of habit — if you learned how to take care of your teeth and gums at an early age then chances are that you still do it today.

However, if this isn’t a habit of yours then this is the perfect article for you. We’re going to discuss some of the most fundamental ways for keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

Brush and Floss Regularly

It’s important to brush your teeth at least twice per day — once in the morning and once at night. You should brush for around 2 minutes each time, making sure to brush every surface of your teeth: the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces. You should also avoid rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash immediately after you have finished brushing.

Some people prefer electric toothbrushes over manual toothbrushes, but it all comes down to personal preference. Electric toothbrushes aren’t necessarily better, but they probably will make your brushing a bit easier.

In addition to brushing, flossing is also extremely important. This is simply because it gets all those little pieces of food and removes the plaque that your toothbrush can’t reach. It’s generally recommended to floss before you brush. Flossing isn’t actually as difficult as it seems:

  • Take a piece of floss roughly 12-18 inches (30-45cm) in length. It helps to wrap the ends around your fingers so that you have a firm grasp.
  • Slip the floss between your teeth one-by-one. Use approximately 8-10 strokes and then move on to another area.

If you have trouble flossing then you can use interdental brushes instead. These are single-tufted brushes but they are significantly wider and sometimes rougher than floss.

Watch Your Diet

Your diet has a big contribution to the health of your teeth and gums. You should avoid sugary foods and drinks as much as you can. This is because this sugar is broken down in the mouth and is turned into acid, this acid can then erode tooth enamel and result in decay.

In addition to watching what you eat, it’s also a good idea to use an antibacterial rinse or chew gum after a meal. This helps remove the small pieces of food from your teeth, it also neutralizes acid and naturally washes bacteria away.

Get Regular Dental Check-Ups

Regular dental check-ups are an essential part of keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. You might think that you’re doing everything right, but you might not be. Your dentist is going to provide you with a professional insight into the health of your mouth.

During routine exams, your dentist can also remove plaque build-up that you might have missed with brushing and flossing. They can also look for signs of decay and let you know if you need any further treatment.

Keeping your teeth healthy might seem like a daunting task, but it’s very important. It’s important not just because it maintains the appearance of your teeth, but also because it will prevent many health problems from occurring such as gum disease.

In the above sections we’ve discussed how you can keep your teeth healthy. Keep in mind that if you have young children, it’s invaluable to get them started with oral hygiene at an early age.
